Brake pads are a crucial part of the disc brakes in your INFINITI G20 sedan, along with brake rotors. They're installed atop your brake calipers, and their job is to create friction as they contact the rotors. This resistance is what slows your wheels and stops your tires.

There are four types of brake pads -- organic, metallic, ceramic, and carbon fiber -- although most cars use organic, as they're dependable, inexpensive, low-level brake-dust producers, and easier on rotors than other kinds -- in other words, great for normal, everyday driving. Metallic brake pads, on the other hand, have a firmer feel, resist heat better, and withstand brake fade, while ceramic brake pads are more dependable in wetter weather, quieter than other kinds of pads, and less sticky brake-dust producers. Carbon fiber brake pads, though, are exceptional by comparison -- they're tough, temperature-resistant, and they deliver the most stopping power.

Unfortunately, no brake pads are going to last indefinitely, no matter what kind they are. They typically last 40,000 to 50,000 miles at a time before you have to replace them. Luckily, there are signs to tell you it's time for a change: ABS or brake warning light on the dashboard, pad damage and wear, whining or vibrating brakes, longer slowdown and stopping times, and grinding sounds. Grinding usually means rotor warp, damage caused by serious brake pad wear.
