Your radiator is a heatsink, helping to keep the engine in your INFINITI G20 from overheating. It uses antifreeze to absorb that excess heat, generated while your engine runs, helping to scatter it afterward.
The process begins when the antifreeze flows through radiator hoses -- inlet and outlet hoses, to be exact. The fluid gets pressurized by a radiator cap along the way. As it does, it accumulates as much heat as it can. Flat, fin-style aluminum tubes then release the heat, and a nearby fan disperses it into the air.
Some radiators even have extra fins, called turbulators, that do a better job of dissipating heat. Others have side-mounted tanks, called transmission coolers, that transfer heat from transmission operation to the antifreeze instead of letting it go into the air.
Unfortunately, any radiator can go bad and fail, but there are signs to tell you that's happening, including strange engine noises, the syrupy-sweet odor of ethylene glycol (indicating a coolant leak), dirty or gooey antifreeze, and antifreeze leaks. Other symptoms include car HVAC malfunctions and a temperature gauge that reads unusually high. To figure out their causes, do a careful radiator inspection.
