As parts of the disc brake system in your INFINITI G35 go, brake pads are critical -- just as important as brake rotors. They attach to brake calipers, and their job is to create friction with the rotors. This resistance is what slows down wheels and eventually stops tires spinning.

The types of brake pads for sale online these days range from organic and metallic to ceramic and carbon fiber. Most cars use organic: you can depend on them for everyday driving, they're cost-conscious, they don't produce much brake dust, and they're a tad easier on rotors than other kinds. The metallic type feel a little firmer, they stand up to heat better, and they resist brake fade. The ceramic type, you can rely on more in wet weather, they're quieter than some alternatives, and their brake dust doesn't stick to wheels as much. The carbon fiber type is comparatively exceptional -- built tough, resistant to very high temperatures, and better at stopping a vehicle than other kinds.

Unfortunately, none last indefinitely, no matter what type they are. Brake pads are typically good for 40,000 to 50,000 miles before they require replacement. Luckily, there are signs that'll tell you it's time to change them. Besides the telltale ABS or brake warning light on the dashboard, they include:

  • Pad wear and damage
  • Whining or vibrating brakes
  • Longer slowdown and stop times
  • Grinding noises

The last symptom usually means your rotors are warped, with the damage likely having been caused by excessive brake pad wear.
