The discs in the brake system in your INFINITI G35 are known as brake rotors. They attach to the wheel hubs of your coupe or sedan via ribs. Their role in the braking process is to clamp your brake calipers, which have brake pads attached. As all three parts rub together and create friction, your car slows and stops. The rotors also help get rid of the excess heat that's the main byproduct of the process.

There are four types of brake rotors for sale online these days: blank & smooth ("smooth"), slotted, drilled ("cross-drilled"), and drilled & slotted. Many cars, like your INFINITI G35, use smooth. A lot of SUVs and trucks, on the other hand, use either slotted or drilled. Some sports cars and performance vehicles, though, use drilled & slotted. Here's everything you need to know about each.

  • Smooth rotors: designed for everyday driving, come solid or vented, easy on brake pads, resistant to cracking and corrosion, long-lasting, low-cost
  • Slotted rotors: spiral-grooved for channeling away contaminants and improving airflow
  • Cross-drilled rotors: have larger surface areas and holes drilled through them for dissipating heat better and dependability in wet driving conditions; ideal for use on the track and when towing
  • Drilled & slotted rotors: combine the utility of slotted and cross-drilled types; exceptional performers

When brake rotors need to be replaced depends on what it says in your owner's manual. According to most, the answer is every 70,000 miles or so. Take a look at yours to get the details. You can also monitor your rotors for signs may be failing or may have gone bad -- namely, damaged rotor surfaces, wobbly-feeling brakes, and unusual noises when you step on the brake pedal. If you see any of these symptoms, do an inspection and change any problematic rotors. However, be sure to swap them out in pairs. It'll keep your car braking as best it can.
