The paddle switches on your INFINITI G35 have been called several names over the years. Early on in their history, during the 1980s, they were called flappy paddles. Now, they're also called paddle shifters.

What they are, though, are levers on your steering wheel that can override your automatic transmission's pre-programmed shift points, letting you quickly get into a desired gear. This is true whether your auto gearbox has a torque converter (i.e., is a regular AT), has a dual clutch (DCT), or is continuously variable (a CVT). (On a CVT transmission, which lacks traditional gears, the points are programmed to mimic actual gears.)

How they work is simple. One paddle does the upshifting, while the other downshifts, usually with "+/-" or "up/down" markers to indicate which is which. In most transmissions, gear or mode changes happen while the vehicle is in drive (D), and one at a time. How quickly that can happen, however, depends on that gearbox.

In short, a paddle switch can give you the freedom to either let your sedan run in auto mode or take control when you want to, making a set of them great for cornering, towing downhill, performance driving, and more. That can mean better control in situations where you need it most.
