Brake pads attach to the calipers in a vehicle's disc brake system. They contact rotors, creating the friction needed to slow and stop its wheels and tires. Without them, disc brakes couldn't work without getting damaged.

Unfortunately, no matter what they're made of, no brake pads last forever. You typically need to replace them every 40,000 to 50,000 miles or so. The signs it's time include:

An ABS warning light or a brake warning light on the dashboard
Damaged and/or worn pads
Vibrating or whining brakes
Longer-than-normal slowing and stopping times
Grinding noises (indicating warped and likely damaged rotors)
