All You Need to Know About the Shocks and Struts in Your INFINITI G37

What They are and What They Do

Your suspension system has many parts. Two of the most important are its shocks and struts. They help the car you love remain stable, and they do it by controlling the activity of each coil spring.

This, in turn, helps keep your wheels aligned. As a result, your tires stay on the road, body roll is minimized, and you can continue to handle and brake consistently. In other words, the drive remains enjoyable.

The Difference Between Them

Shock absorbers, you'll find mounted vertically behind your tires. Their hydraulics minimize spring movement. Strut assemblies, however, you'll usually find mounted horizontally; they look like extensions of your wheels. They often contain a spring and a shock and they're weight-bearing; as such, they're a little stronger than a shock alone. Note that some vehicles have shocks on one axle and struts on the other, but that not all vehicles have struts.

Occasionally, a shock absorber or strut assembly can wear out. In such cases, replacement, not repair, is recommended. Fortunately, if yours have started going bad, there are symptoms that'll tell you.

The Signs They're Failing or Bad

Look for:

  • Rougher-than-usual ride quality
  • Excessive forward lean when stopping
  • Unusual bouncing
  • Pulling sideways when turning
  • Generally poor steering response and loss of control at higher speeds
  • Uneven tire treads or flat areas on tires (not otherwise caused by a wheel alignment issue), otherwise called cupping
  • A film of oil or grease on the parts

Fortunately, such symptoms usually appear well before the situation worsens. If you're seeing any, to figure out what might be happening with your suspension, do a thorough inspection. You should inspect the system every 50,000 miles, usually. Be sure to double-check your owner's manual for a maintenance schedule. Replace any shock or strut that the results call for changing.
