What They are

They're critical parts of your luxury sedan's suspension system.

What They Do

They help the car you love driving remain stable. They achieve this by controlling the activity of its coil springs, which helps maintain wheel alignment in turn. There are three results:

  • Body roll is minimized
  • Your tires remain on the road
  • Your vehicle continues handling and braking consistently

In other words, the drive remains enjoyable.

The Difference Between Them

Shock Absorbers

  • Usually mounted vertically, behind the tires
  • Their hydraulics minimize spring movement

Strut Assemblies

  • Look like wheel extensions
  • Often horizontally mounted
  • Usually contain both a spring and a shock
  • Weight-bearing, so, they're stronger than shocks alone

Occasionally, both can wear out. In such cases, a full replacement is recommended. If you think yours have started to go bad, there are symptoms you can look for.

The Signs They're Failing

For one, ride quality that's become rougher than usual -- that can mean everything from your car leaning forward excessively during stops to unusual bouncing and pulling to the side when turning. More often than not, it means poorer steering response, accompanied by loss of control at higher speeds. Other indicators include uneven tire treads or flat areas on your tires, called cupping, and an oily or greasy film on the parts themselves.

Fortunately, you'll probably see these well before the things get worse. If you do, thoroughly inspect your suspension. You should check on the system every 50,000 miles or so but be sure to double-check your owner's manual's maintenance schedule for details. Replace any shock or strut that the results call for changing. You can find them here our auto parts store.
