What Pulleys Does a Car Have?

When your engine is running, its crank pulley rotates, transferring motion to other pulleys via your serpentine belt or V belt. Idler pulleys consist of a cylindrical mechanism and a bearing, which, when turned, spin freely. They sometimes stand in for this or that accessory. Tensioner pulleys, also called drive belt tensioners, work similarly, but they also help maintain proper belt tension using spring-loaded parts to apply the necessary pressure.

What are the Signs a Car Has Bad Pulleys?

There are different symptoms for each type of pulley. Signs of a bad crank pulley include a vibrating engine, alternator failure, power steering pump failure, a damaged transmission, and irregular engine idling speed. Signs of a bad idler pulley include visible wear, squealing, a damaged bearing, and pulley damage itself. Signs of a bad drive belt tensioner include grinding, squeaking, abnormal belt wear, and belt-driven accessory failure.
