Protect Your INFINITI's Engine with Timing Belts and Chains
Our experts at Coulter INFINITI are well aware of how critical components like timing belts and chains are for ensuring your safety while driving. These components synchronize your crankshaft and camshaft rotation. Precise timing allows valves to open and close at exactly the right moments. Engine damage occurs instantly if timing components fail.
How Timing Systems Operate
Timing belts or chains connect the crankshaft to camshafts, ensuring valves open when pistons are positioned correctly. Belts use reinforced rubber with teeth that mesh with sprockets. Chains use metal links similar to bicycle chains. Tensioners maintain proper tightness throughout operation. The QX80 and Q60 may feature either system depending on engine type.
Wear and Failure Causes
Timing belts dry out and crack from age and heat exposure. Belt teeth strip when tensioners wear out. Timing chains stretch from normal wear, throwing off valve timing. Inadequate oil changes cause chain guides to deteriorate. Failed water pumps sometimes damage timing belts during catastrophic failure. Aftermarket timing components rarely match genuine INFINITI specifications for material quality. Your engine depends on precise timing to avoid costly damage.
Critical Replacement Intervals
Replace timing belts according to your owner's manual, typically between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. Never exceed manufacturer intervals since belt failure destroys engines. Timing chains last longer but require inspection if you hear rattling during cold starts. Replace chains if your check engine light indicates timing issues. Many mechanics recommend replacing water pumps simultaneously since they're accessible during timing service.
