Brake rotors are integral parts of the disc brake system in your INFINITI G20. They're the discs themselves, which connect to your wheels' hubs via ribs. Their job is to clamp to your brake calipers. As both rub together, with brake pads between them, the pads create the friction required to slow and stop your sedan. The rotors also help expel the excess heat generated in the process.

There are four types of brake rotors -- blank & smooth (or "smooth"), slotted, drilled (or "cross-drilled"), and drilled & slotted -- though many cars use the blank & smooth kind. Smooth rotors are either solid or vented, easier on brake pads, resistant to corrosion and cracks, long-lasting, and low-cost -- ideal for everyday driving. Slotted rotors are spiral-grooved to channel dust and other contaminants away and to improve airflow. Cross-drilled rotors have holes drilled all the way through them as well as larger surface areas for dissipating heat, reliability in wet weather, and track and towing applications. Drilled & slotted rotors offer the best features of both the slotted and drilled kinds.

Owner's manuals usually recommend replacing brake rotors every 70,000 miles; consult yours for more info. Also, keep an eye out for signs that they may be failing or might have already gone bad: surface damage, wobbly brakes, and unusual noises when you brake. If you see any of them, inspect your rotors and repair or change any that you need to. However, be sure you replace them in pairs to keep your sedan braking properly.
